Osinachi Ohale Retires from International Football After 16 Years of Service to Nigeria

Super Falcons defender and legend, Osinachi Ohale, has announced her retirement from international football after 86 appearances for Nigeria, bringing an end to a remarkable 16-year career that included four FIFA Women’s World Cups and five WAFCON titles.

The 33-year-old made the announcement in an emotional farewell message, reflecting on her 16 years representing Nigeria and expressing gratitude for the opportunity to wear the country's green and white jersey.

Ohale, who earned 86 international caps, described the decision as a difficult one but said she was leaving the international stage with gratitude and no regrets.

“After 16 years of wearing the Nigerian jersey, representing my country, and giving everything I had to the beautiful game, I have made the very difficult decision to retire from international football,” she wrote.

Her retirement marks the end of a significant chapter in Nigerian women's football, having been part of the Super Falcons across multiple generations and major international competitions.

A career defined by consistency and silverware

During her time with the Super Falcons, Ohale represented Nigeria at four FIFA Women's World Cups and seven editions of the Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

Her international career also included five WAFCON triumphs, making her part of a generation of Nigerian players who continued to uphold the country's status in African women's football.

Reflecting on her journey, the defender said the memories extended beyond appearances and trophies, highlighting the sacrifices, friendships, victories and difficult moments that shaped her career.

She also recalled the pride of standing for Nigeria and singing the national anthem before matches.

“I gave this jersey my youth, my strength, my sweat, my tears, and my heart. And if I had to do it all over again, I would choose Nigeria every single time,” she stated.

Gratitude to teammates, fans and the NFF

Ohale expressed appreciation to her teammates, coaches, technical staff, family, friends and the Nigeria Football Federation for their support throughout her international career.

She also reserved special recognition for Nigerian supporters, thanking them for standing by the Super Falcons through both victories and defeats.

“To the Nigerian fans: thank you for believing in us, supporting us, celebrating with us, and standing by us through every high and every low. Your love made wearing this jersey even more special,” she wrote.

The defender said she would always treasure the experiences and relationships built during her time with the national team.

Despite bringing her international career to a close, Ohale made it clear that her connection with Nigeria would remain permanent.

Her farewell message highlighted the significance of representing her country, describing the opportunity to serve Nigeria as her greatest achievement.

“Today, I say goodbye to international football with no regrets - only gratitude,” she said.

“But the greatest achievement of all is knowing that I had the privilege to serve my country.”

She concluded with a message that captured the emotion of her retirement:

“The jersey will leave my shoulders, but it will never leave my heart.
