Super Falcons Beat Comoros 7-0 on Aggregate, Set Up Morocco Clash in LA 2028 Olympic Qualifiers

Nigeria’s Super Falcons secured their place in the next round of the African qualifiers for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games after beating Comoros 5-0 in the second leg at Remo Stars Stadium, Ikenne, on Tuesday, 13 October 2026.

The result completed a 7-0 aggregate victory for Nigeria, who had won the first leg 2-0 on Friday, 9 October.

The Super Falcons created opportunities early, with Gift Monday coming close to scoring in the ninth minute. However, Nigeria had to wait until the 41st minute to take the lead.

Uchenna Kanu intercepted a mistake by the Comoros goalkeeper and played the ball to Toni Payne, who finished from close range to put Nigeria ahead.

Captain Rasheedat Ajibade had earlier left the pitch following a collision in the 28th minute, with Folashade Ijamilusi introduced as her replacement.

Kanu and Payne Lead Second-Half Surge

Nigeria increased the tempo after the break, with the changes from the technical crew helping the team maintain its attacking threat.

In the 57th minute, Ijamilusi delivered a cross that Kanu met with a header to make it 2-0 on the night.

Payne doubled her tally in the 63rd minute after Blessing Okpe drove forward and cut the ball back into a dangerous area.

Three minutes later, Kanu scored her second of the match, heading home another delivery from Ijamilusi to complete her brace and take Nigeria’s lead to 4-0.

Christy Ucheibe converted a penalty in the 72nd minute after Okpe was brought down inside the box, completing the scoring.

The Super Falcons finished with five goals in the second leg and seven across both matches.

Eguavoen Reflects on Performance and Squad Depth

Speaking after the match, Super Falcons coach Austin Eguavoen discussed the team’s performance, the importance of building a stronger pool of players and the opportunities created by the international window.

He praised Ijamilusi’s contribution after her late call-up, with the forward providing two assists and helping Nigeria sustain its attacking threat following Ajibade’s early departure.

Eguavoen also spoke about the need to continue developing options across the squad rather than relying on a limited group of players. He stressed the importance of using international matches to assess players and strengthen the team’s structure.

On Nigeria’s previous disappointment at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, the coach indicated that the team had moved forward and was now focused on the Olympic qualification campaign.

Ajibade’s condition also came up during the press conference. Eguavoen said the captain had been taken to hospital for an MRI scan, with a further update expected from the medical team.

Ijamilusi also reflected on the opportunity to contribute after coming into the match for the injured captain.

Comoros Coach Admits Nigeria Had the Pace

Comoros head coach Youssouf Abdallah acknowledged Nigeria’s advantage after the 5-0 defeat, pointing to the Super Falcons’ speed and the difficulties his team faced as the match progressed.

Speaking at the post-match press conference, Abdallah explained that Comoros became tired and left spaces for Nigeria to exploit when they pushed forward late in the first half. He also thanked Nigeria for the welcome his team received and said the experience would help his players learn and improve.

Despite the heavy aggregate defeat, the Comoros coach stressed the value of competing against an experienced side as his team continues to develop.

Morocco Await in the Next Round

With Comoros eliminated, Nigeria will now face Morocco’s Atlas Lionesses in the next round of the African qualifiers for the LA 2028 Olympic Games.

Morocco progressed after Congo withdrew from the competition. The tie against Nigeria is scheduled to fall within CAF’s published window of 23 February to 6 March 2027. Exact dates, venues and kick-off times are yet to be confirmed.

The next round will present a more demanding test for the Super Falcons as they continue their bid to return to the women’s Olympic football tournament.

Africa has two places available in the women’s football competition at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. Nigeria must continue progressing through the knockout rounds to secure one of them.

For now, the 7-0 aggregate win over Comoros gives the Super Falcons a positive result to build on as preparations turn towards Morocco.

Ademola Sports will continue to follow the Super Falcons’ journey in the LA 2028 Olympic qualifying campaign.
