Nigeria Super Falcons Begin LA 2028 Olympics Race as Coach Eguavoen Names 28-Player Squad for Comoros

Nigeria’s Super Falcons will begin their quest for qualification for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games against Comoros in October, with interim head coach Augustine Eguavoen naming a 28-player squad for the two-legged second-round qualifying fixture.

Captain Rasheedat Ajibade, goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie, forwards Asisat Oshoala, Gift Monday and Uchenna Kanu are among the established internationals included in the squad released by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

Defenders Michelle Alozie, Oluwatosin Demehin, Ashley Plumptre and Shukurat Oladipo also make the list, alongside midfielders Christy Ucheibe, Jennifer Echegini and Toni Payne.

The squad also features several young players, including Christiana Uzoma, Farida Abdulwahab, Tumininu Adeshina, Favour Nkwocha, Shakirat Moshood, Oluwakemi Adegbuyi and Janet Akekoromowei.

The invited players are expected to report to camp in Ijebu-Ode on Saturday, October 3, ahead of the crucial Olympic qualifying encounter.

Comoros to Host First Leg in Ikenne

The first leg of the second-round fixture is scheduled for Friday, October 9, with the return leg taking place on Tuesday, October 13.

Both matches will be played at the Remo Stars Sports Stadium in Ikenne-Remo, Ogun State, despite Comoros being the designated home team for the first leg.

According to the NFF, Comoros does not have a CAF-approved venue for international matches, leading to the decision to stage both encounters in Nigeria.

The Super Falcons must secure victory on aggregate across the two legs to advance to the next stage of the qualifying campaign.

Super Falcons’ Road to LA 2028

The Comoros encounter is the first major hurdle in Nigeria’s bid to reach the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.

Should the Falcons progress, they will face either Morocco or DR Congo in the next qualifying round, scheduled for February and March 2027.

Victory at that stage would set up another encounter against one of Tunisia, Senegal, Benin Republic or Mali between October 4 and 12, 2027.

The final qualifying round is scheduled for November 23 to December 4, 2027, with potential opponents including Cameroon, Guinea, DR Congo, Côte d’Ivoire, Algeria, Burkina Faso and the Central African Republic.

Only two African teams will qualify for the women’s football tournament at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics, meaning Nigeria must successfully navigate the remaining qualifying rounds to secure a place.

Nigeria Target Back-to-Back Olympic Appearances

The Super Falcons returned to the Olympic Games at Paris 2024 after a 16-year absence, having last featured at Beijing 2008.

Qualification for Los Angeles 2028 would give Nigeria consecutive appearances at the women’s Olympic football tournament for the first time since Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008.

With the Olympic qualification campaign extending into December 2027, the immediate focus for Eguavoen and his players will be to overcome Comoros and keep Nigeria’s hopes of returning to the global sporting event alive.
