Nigeria’s Super Eagles travel to Bissau to face Guinea-Bissau’s Djurtus, also known as the Wild Dogs, in their second Group L match of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.

The match is scheduled for Tuesday, 29 September 2026, at Estádio Nacional 24 de Setembro in Bissau. Kick-off is 4:00pm local time, 5:00pm WAT.

Both teams won their opening fixtures. Nigeria came from behind to beat Madagascar 2-1 in Uyo on Friday, 25 September, while Guinea-Bissau recorded a 2-0 victory over Tanzania.

The two sides are level on three points, with Guinea-Bissau ahead on goal difference after Matchday One.

Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania are co-hosting AFCON 2027 and have already secured places at the finals. Tanzania will still participate in Group L, but only the highest-placed team among Nigeria, Guinea-Bissau and Madagascar will claim the group’s remaining qualifying place.

That makes Tuesday’s meeting important for both sides. A win would give either Nigeria or Guinea-Bissau six points from their opening two matches and an early advantage in the race to qualify.

The other Matchday Two fixture is Madagascar vs Tanzania, also scheduled for Tuesday.

Nigeria enter the campaign after finishing third at AFCON 2025, but missing out on the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Guinea-Bissau are seeking another appearance at the continental finals after competing at the 2017, 2019, 2021 and 2023 editions.

Super Eagles arrive in Bissau

The Super Eagles arrived in Bissau on Sunday evening ahead of Tuesday’s qualifier.

According to the Nigeria Football Federation, the delegation travelled aboard a chartered ValueJet aircraft, which landed at Aeroporto Internacional Osvaldo Vieira at 7:07pm local time, 8:07pm in Nigeria.

The team completed a recovery session on Saturday and trained behind closed doors on Sunday morning before travelling to Guinea-Bissau that evening. The NFF confirmed that the full team travelled with the delegation.

Acting NFF General Secretary Dr Emmanuel Ikpeme urged the players to remain focused ahead of the match, noting that Nigeria had won their previous qualifying visit to Bissau 1-0 in March 2023.

Nigeria 2-1 Madagascar: how the Eagles opened their campaign

Nigeria began their qualifying campaign with a comeback victory over Madagascar at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo.

Madagascar took the lead through Ehsan Kari in the 16th minute. George Ilenikhena equalised in first-half stoppage time, scoring on his senior debut, before substitute Moses Usor netted the winner in the 65th minute, also on his first senior appearance for Nigeria.

The result gave Nigeria three points, but the match also produced a significant milestone for Moses Simon, who earned his 100th senior cap for the Super Eagles.

Simon made his Nigeria debut against Uganda on 25 March 2015. He became the fifth Nigerian player to reach 100 senior international appearances, joining Ahmed Musa, Vincent Enyeama, Joseph Yobo and Alex Iwobi.

The Super Eagles showed resilience after conceding first, but head coach Éric Chelle acknowledged that the team needed to improve, particularly when facing a compact defensive block.

That will be an important area of focus against Guinea-Bissau, who will be looking to make life difficult for Nigeria in front of their home supporters.

Chelle: Super Eagles must improve against Guinea-Bissau

Super Eagles coach Éric Chelle says Nigeria must improve ahead of Tuesday’s AFCON 2027 qualifier against Guinea-Bissau.

After the 2-1 win over Madagascar, Chelle said the team made an early mistake, missed several chances and struggled against a compact defence. He was pleased with the players’ response but stressed the need to analyse the performance and find solutions for the next match.

Chelle said Guinea-Bissau have different strengths and weaknesses, adding that Nigeria must prepare specifically for the challenge in Bissau. He did not confirm whether the team would use the same formation, but emphasised the importance of maintaining the right mentality and making good decisions on the pitch.

Guinea-Bissau 2-0 Tanzania: Djurtus make winning start

Guinea-Bissau opened their qualifying campaign with a 2-0 victory over Tanzania.

Franculino Djú broke the deadlock in the 33rd minute, while Mama Baldé doubled the advantage in the 58th minute.

The victory gave Guinea-Bissau three points and a two-goal advantage in goal difference. They now face Nigeria, hoping to protect their perfect start and strengthen their position in Group L.

The Djurtus have qualified for four consecutive AFCON tournaments from 2017 to 2023, but have yet to record a win at the finals. A positive result against Nigeria would strengthen their position in the race for the remaining Group L place.

Victor Osimhen was included in the original selection but withdrew with a muscle injury. Taiwo Awoniyi was called up as his replacement.

Franculino Djú and Mama Baldé were both on target in Guinea-Bissau’s opening victory over Tanzania. Their goals helped the Djurtus secure an important result before returning home to face Nigeria.

Opa Sanganté is also part of the squad. The defender scored the own goal that decided the teams’ most recent meeting at AFCON 2023 in January 2024.

Nigeria won the first meeting at the 2021 AFCON in Cameroon, with second-half goals from Sadiq Umar and William Troost-Ekong.

Guinea-Bissau then recorded their only victory in the fixture, beating Nigeria 1-0 in Abuja during the 2023 AFCON qualifiers. Nigeria won the return leg in Bissau by the same score, with Moses Simon converting a penalty.

The Super Eagles also won the teams’ most recent meeting, at AFCON 2023 in Côte d’Ivoire, through an Opa Sanganté own goal.

Referees for Guinea-Bissau vs Nigeria

CAF has appointed an Ethiopian officiating team for Tuesday’s match.

Tewodros Mitiku will serve as referee, assisted by Fasika Biru Fasika and Tigle Belachew. Manuhe Woldetsadik is the fourth official.

Senegalese official Yaya Balde has been appointed match commissioner, while Papa Bakary Gassama of The Gambia will serve as referee assessor.

Nigeria travel to Bissau knowing that another victory would strengthen their position in Group L, but Guinea-Bissau will also be aiming to protect their perfect start.
