Flying Eagles Miss Out on U-20 AFCON After Heavy WAFU B Final Defeat to Burkina Faso

Nigeria’s Flying Eagles have failed to qualify for the 2027 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations after suffering a heavy 4-1 defeat to Burkina Faso in the final of the WAFU B U-20 Championship in Yamoussoukro, Côte d’Ivoire.

The defeat brings a disappointing end to Nigeria’s campaign, with the Flying Eagles suffering back-to-back defeats to Burkina Faso during the tournament.

Burkina Faso had already defeated Nigeria 2-0 in the group stage before completing the double in the final with a convincing 4-1 victory to lift the WAFU B trophy.

The Burkinabè made a blistering start to the final, scoring three goals within the opening 15 minutes. They opened the scoring in the 3rd minute, doubled their advantage in the 5th minute, and added a third in the 15th minute, leaving Nigeria with a mountain to climb.

Abdulmuiz Adeleke pulled one back for Nigeria from the penalty spot in the 52nd minute, taking his tournament tally to five goals.

However, the Flying Eagles were unable to complete a comeback, with Burkina Faso adding a fourth goal in the 90th minute to seal a comprehensive victory and confirm their status as WAFU B champions.

A Difficult Campaign for Maikaba’s Side

Abdul Maikaba’s Flying Eagles played five matches during the tournament, recording two victories, two defeats and one penalty-shootout victory against Côte d’Ivoire in the semi-final.

Nigeria scored 10 goals and conceded 10 across the competition, highlighting some of the defensive challenges faced by the team throughout the tournament.

The semi-final against hosts Côte d’Ivoire provided Nigeria with a route to the final after a dramatic encounter ended 2-2 after extra time.

Nigeria eventually prevailed 4-3 on penalties, with goalkeeper Clinton Lawani playing a decisive role by saving two spot-kicks.

However, Burkina Faso proved too strong in the final and completed an unbeaten campaign.

Burkina Faso Make History

The victory represents a historic achievement for Burkina Faso, who claimed the WAFU B U-20 Championship for the first time in their history.

They went unbeaten throughout the tournament and capped their impressive campaign by defeating Nigeria twice first in the group stage and again in the final.

More importantly, the triumph earns Burkina Faso the WAFU B zone’s sole qualification ticket for the 2027 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations.

Why Nigeria Missed Out on AFCON U-20

Ghana’s status as host of the 2027 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations had a major impact on the qualification process.

With Ghana already securing one of the two automatic qualification slots allocated to the WAFU B zone as the host nation, only one additional continental ticket was available to the region.

Under the qualification arrangement, that remaining ticket goes to the winner of the WAFU B U-20 Championship.

With Burkina Faso lifting the trophy, the Burkinabè have secured the sole WAFU B qualification ticket, leaving Nigeria outside the continental tournament.

A Major Setback for the Flying Eagles

Nigeria failure to qualify for the U-20 AFCON represents a major setback for one of Africa’s most successful youth football nations.

The last time the Flying Eagles failed to qualify for the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations was in 2021.

Nigeria were eliminated from the 2020 WAFU B tournament in Benin Republic after failing to win a single group-stage match, drawing against Côte d’Ivoire and losing to Ghana.

Their absence from the 2021 U-20 AFCON in Mauritania also meant Nigeria missed the opportunity to qualify for that year’s FIFA U-20 World Cup.

World Cup Dream Also Comes to an End

The latest failure is particularly painful because the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations serves as the pathway to the FIFA U-20 World Cup.

A total of 12 teams will compete at the U-20 AFCON, with the top four teams earning automatic qualification for the FIFA U-20 World Cup.

By missing out on the continental tournament, the Flying Eagles have also lost the opportunity to compete for one of Africa’s World Cup qualification places.

For Maikaba and his players, the campaign ends in disappointment despite moments of promise and a dramatic semi-final victory.

Abdulmuiz Adeleke emerged as one of Nigeria standout performers, finishing the tournament with five goals, including Nigeria’s only goal in the final.

For Burkina Faso, however, it is a historic night their first WAFU B U-20 title, an unbeaten campaign, and a place at the 2027 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations.
