FIBA Confirms Dates for 2027 Women’s AfroBasket

FIBA has officially confirmed the dates for the 2027 Women’s AfroBasket, with Africa’s premier women’s basketball championship scheduled to take place from July 23 to August 1, 2027.

The 10-day continental tournament will bring together Africa’s leading women’s national teams as they battle for the AfroBasket crown. FIBA’s official calendar lists the competition for the July 23–August 1 window, although the host country has yet to be announced.

The announcement gives teams across the continent a clear timeline as preparations begin for the next edition of the championship.

Nigeria Begin Title Defence Journey

Nigeria will enter the competition as the reigning African champions after D’Tigress successfully defended their title at the 2025 Women’s AfroBasket in Côte d’Ivoire.

The victory continued Nigeria’s dominance in the competition, with the West Africans adding another title to their impressive record.

D’Tigress will therefore be among the leading contenders when the 2027 tournament gets underway, although they must first navigate the qualification process.

Road to 2027

The 2027 AfroBasket will also carry added importance because of its connection to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic qualification pathway.

FIBA has confirmed that the top two teams from the 2027 Women’s AfroBasket will earn places in the 2028 FIBA Women's Olympic Qualifying Tournaments.

That makes the continental championship more than a fight for African supremacy, with Olympic qualification providing an additional incentive for the continent's leading teams.

Host Country Still Pending

While the dates have been confirmed, FIBA is yet to announce the host nation for the 2027 finals.

The tournament will mark another major chapter in the growth of women's basketball in Africa, with the continent's leading teams expected to compete for one of the most prestigious prizes in African sports.

For Nigeria, the objective will be clear: retain the AfroBasket crown and secure another step towards the 2028 Olympic Games.

The countdown to July 23, 2027, has officially begun.
