D’Tigress Thank Tinubu As Presidential Financial Rewards Hit Players’ Accounts

Members of Nigeria’s senior women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, have expressed their appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu after receiving the financial rewards promised to them following their historic triumph at the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket.

The players’ accounts were credited with the naira equivalent of $100,000 each, while members of the technical team received the equivalent of $50,000 each as part of the presidential reward package.

The payment follows D’Tigress’ remarkable run at the 2025 AfroBasket, where they defeated Mali in the final to claim a record-extending seventh continental title. The victory also saw Nigeria become the first nation to win five consecutive editions of the women’s AfroBasket.

The financial reward was one of several commitments made by President Tinubu to the team in recognition of their achievement.

In addition to the cash reward, the President had promised members of the team three-bedroom apartments in Abuja and national honours. The housing documents and honours were subsequently presented to the players and officials.

D’Tigress captain Amy Okonkwo led the team in thanking the President for fulfilling the financial commitment, describing the gesture as a significant show of appreciation for the team’s efforts.

The players also acknowledged the National Sports Commission, the Nigeria Basketball Federation and other officials involved in ensuring that the promised rewards reached the team.

With the latest payment completed, the Federal Government has now fulfilled the major components of the reward package announced for D’Tigress following their historic AfroBasket success.

The recognition comes as Nigeria continues to celebrate the achievements of its women’s national teams on the international stage.
