Nigeria’s WAFCON 2026 preparations took an unexpected turn this week after the Super Falcons’ friendly against Ghana’s Black Queens, scheduled for Saturday, July 18 in Casablanca, was called off with roughly less than a day’s notice.

The Nigeria Football Federation confirmed the cancellation on the Super Falcons’ official X account on Friday, stating: “The friendly match between Nigeria’s Super Falcons and Ghana’s Black Queens has been cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances.” No further explanation was given.

With Ghana off the table, Nigeria now turns to Tanzania’s Twiga Stars for a friendly in Casablanca. It’s a chance for coach Justine Madugu to check on his squad’s shape, with captain Rasheedat Ajibade, Asisat Oshoala, and goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie among those already in camp, before Group C opens against Malawi on July 28.

For Tanzania, this is a bigger test. Head coach Bakari Nyundo Shime said via CECAFA Online: “We are going to face Nigeria and also play a second friendly match with another team before the tournament starts. These friendly matches will help us shape up well ahead of the tournament.” Tanzania open their own Group B campaign against South Africa on July 27.

Ten-time African champions Nigeria will be chasing an eleventh WAFCON title in Morocco, in a tournament that carries extra weight this year: the top four teams qualify automatically for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.

Both sides open their campaigns just days after this friendly. Nigeria begin their Group C title defence against Malawi on July 28, while Tanzania kick off their Group B campaign against South Africa on July 27.
