Rivers United vs San Pedro: Tactical Breakdown

Rivers United’s 2-2 draw with FC San Pedro saw them eliminated from the CAF Champions League after the aggregate score ended 3-3, with San Pedro progressing on away goals.

Beyond the result, the game highlighted several tactical and technical issues for Rivers.

A promising start

Rivers lined up in a 4-2-3-1 on paper but often operated in a 4-4-2 in possession, with the number 10 given freedom to roam and drop into midfield.

The approach worked during the opening ten minutes, as Rivers created three chances in quick succession. However, San Pedro soon blocked the passing lanes and disrupted Rivers' build-up.

After conceding two quick goals, Rivers changed their approach and relied more on long balls to bypass San Pedro's pressure.

The midfield problem

Rivers also pressed in a 4-4-2, but the midfield pairing often lacked coordination. One midfielder stayed deeper while the other was allowed to move forward and receive the ball.

When Rivers lost possession, the gaps between them became vulnerable, and San Pedro were quick to exploit them.

Rivers were also too slow and sloppy in possession. Simple passes were misplaced and, on the occasions when their movement created space, the passes into those areas were often poor.

The left side offered a solution

The left flank provided Rivers with one of their better attacking mechanisms.

The left winger could drop deeper or move inside to draw his defender away, allowing the left-back to attack the space created and provide width.

The idea was effective when executed, particularly in the second half when the left-back was given more freedom to carry the ball forward and deliver crosses.

The problem was the quality of the balls into those spaces. Rivers identified the openings but often failed to exploit them.

Better second half, poor execution

Rivers improved after the break and created several chances, but they were wasteful.

Alex, operating as the number 10, missed a number of opportunities, while San Pedro's defenders deserve credit for reading and cutting out several dangerous passes in the final third.

Rivers eventually got back into the game through a penalty following a handball, but they could not find the winning goal required to progress.

Clinton stood out

Goalkeeper Clinton, formerly of Bayelsa United and the Nigerian U-20 team, was vocal in organising the defence and was not at fault for either goal.

His distribution was also useful, particularly when San Pedro's pressure made short build-up difficult. His willingness to play long gave Rivers another route forward.

The substitutions

The substitutions were another talking point.

Rivers removed two of their more creative players in an attempt to change the game, with one of the changes, Shehu, drawing criticism from the fans.

Assistant coach Yemi explained that the decision was influenced by Rivers' plan to play more direct football, with the technical team believing Shehu did not provide the physical advantage they wanted for that approach.

While the explanation is understandable, removing creative players made it more difficult for Rivers to break down San Pedro's defence once they needed to create chances.

Individual errors

Individual mistakes also contributed to Rivers' problems.

The left-back struggled defensively in the second half, while the left-sided centre-back had a poor first half and was involved in the sequence leading to San Pedro's second goal.

The defensive midfielder who was asked to sit deep also struggled, with poor touches and misplaced passes affecting Rivers' ability to build attacks.

The bigger picture

Rivers United had the tactical ideas to hurt San Pedro, particularly during the opening ten minutes and in the second half.

But poor execution, slow ball circulation, individual errors and missed chances prevented them from sustaining those good moments.

The game ultimately showed that having the right ideas is only part of the equation. Rivers needed better execution in possession and greater composure in the decisive moments.

San Pedro took advantage of those weaknesses and ultimately did enough to secure their place in the next round.
