NBBF Congress Controversy Deepens As Kwara, Osun Chairmen Allegedly Denied Entry In Yola

The controversy surrounding the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) has taken another turn after the chairmen of the Kwara and Osun State Basketball Associations were allegedly prevented from accessing the venue of the federation’s Extraordinary Congress in Yola.
Osun State Basketball Association chairman, Babalola Opeyemi, and his Kwara counterpart, Aliu Jubril, were reportedly among the stakeholders who could not gain entry into the congress venue.
According to reports, Opeyemi was allegedly prevented from entering the venue by police personnel, with claims that the action was carried out on the instruction of the NBBF executive committee. The allegation has not been independently verified.
Jubril was also reportedly denied access to the congress hall, adding another layer to the growing disagreement among stakeholders over the federation’s affairs.
The reported exclusion has raised questions over accreditation and representation at a meeting expected to bring together members of the basketball community ahead of the federation’s electoral process.
The development comes amid wider disagreements surrounding the NBBF’s governance and the procedures leading to the Yola congress. Some stakeholders have raised concerns about the notice given for the meeting, the process through which it was convened and the participation of members of the federation’s board.
Despite the controversy, the Extraordinary Congress went ahead in Yola, with reports indicating that 39 of the 44 accredited delegates attended the meeting.
The congress subsequently approved October 15, 2026, as the date for the NBBF Elective Congress in Abuja.
The federation also approved the establishment of a seven-member Electoral Committee and a three-member Elections Appeals Committee to oversee the electoral process.
The latest allegations are likely to fuel further debate among stakeholders, particularly over the accreditation and representation of state basketball associations at NBBF congresses.
With the elective congress now scheduled for October 15, attention will turn to the electoral process and whether the concerns raised by stakeholders will be resolved ahead of the election.
