Kiki Iriafen: The Nigerian-American Star Who Chose Team USA

Kiki Iriafen's rise in basketball has been remarkable, but for Nigerian fans, her journey with the United States women's national team comes with a sense of what might have been.

Her performances helped strengthen her position within the USA Basketball programme and eventually earned her a place in the American squad for the 2026 FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup.

In her World Cup debut against China, Iriafen scored five points and grabbed three rebounds as the United States opened their campaign with a comfortable victory.

While her role remains limited in a star-studded American squad, the 22-year-old's selection highlights just how quickly her career has progressed.

For Nigeria, Iriafen represents another example of the immense basketball talent within the Nigerian diaspora. Her decision to represent the United States may have ended hopes of seeing her in the green and white of D'Tigress, but her Nigerian roots remain an important part of her identity.
