Nigeria's Super Falcons have been dealt a fresh blow following news that forward Esther Okoronkwo is set to follow suit with teammate Deborah Abiodun, after being ruled out for the rest of the campaign due to a season-ending injury.
The setback also sidelines the attacker from Nigeria's upcoming 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games qualification campaign in October, dealing another severe blow to the national team's forward setup.
The news was confirmed by AFC Toronto head coach Marko Milanovic, who disclosed that the Nigerian international will miss the remaining duration of the year as she recovers from her physical setback.
“It’s hard to know exactly where it happened,” Milanovic said during last Sunday's prematch conference for the NSL game against Calgary Wild. “It could have been just wear and tear over a longer period.”
The coach went on to state that the star attacker has undergone multiple MRI scans, but the results are yet to provide the club with a clear recovery timeline.
“Some of the things presented themselves a little differently than what they were, despite MRI usually being able to show you everything,” Milanovic explained.
“So, we’re still waiting to confirm that. But she’s more than likely out for the rest of the year.”
Okoronkwo's forced departure from action comes as a heavy loss for the Northern Super League side, where she has served as a central focal point in attack, leaving her club to navigate their remaining fixtures without her offensive threat.

This latest fitness blow directly follows the mid-week update regarding Washington Spirit midfielder Deborah Abiodun, who was similarly sidelined for the remainder of the season with a hip injury.

Okoronkwo's injury comes on the heels of a difficult period for the national team, having featured in Nigeria's squad during the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
That tournament ended in heartbreak for the Super Falcons following a quarterfinal exit, an outcome that saw the nine-time African champions fail to qualify for the FIFA Women's World Cup for the first time in their history.
Despite these recent international challenges, Nigeria must immediately turn their focus toward their opening LA 2028 Olympic qualifying fixtures next month.
The Super Falcons are set to host Comoros in a second-round double-header, with both legs scheduled to take place at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne-Remo on October 9 and October 13, 2026.
