First African Team Ever (Male or Female) to Wear a 10-Star Jersey: Super Falcons Set to Make History at WAFCON 2026

First African Team Ever (Male or Female) to Wear a 10-Star Jersey: Super Falcons Set to Make History at WAFCON 2026

For the first time, the Super Falcons will wear a jersey featuring 10 stars at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations. Each star represents one of their record 10 continental titles.

This is a notable milestone. No other African national team (male or female) has reached 10 continental championships and chosen to display them on the jersey in this way. Globally, it is also rare. Most national teams reserve stars exclusively for World Cup victories. Brazil leads with five. Germany and Italy have four each. Egypt’s men’s team has previously worn seven stars for their Men’s Africa Cup of Nations titles. No team currently wears 10 stars for continental success.

Among women’s national teams, Nigeria now stands alone at the top. The closest challengers are the United States, China, and Brazil, each with nine continental titles in their respective regions. Germany follows with eight UEFA Women’s Euro titles. Nigeria’s 10th title, secured in 2025, moved them clear of that group.

The 10-star jersey was first worn in Thursday’s (July 23rd) closed-door friendly against Tanzania in Casablanca. It will now feature throughout WAFCON 2026 in Morocco as the Super Falcons begin the defence of their title.

Venue

The 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations is being hosted by Morocco, with matches taking place in Rabat and Casablanca.

•  Equatorial Guinea – 2 titles (2008, 2012)

•  South Africa – 1 title (2022)

This edition of the tournament also serves as Africa’s qualifying pathway for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil. The top four teams will secure direct qualification for the World Cup.

The Super Falcons enter the competition as clear favourites, but the presence of the 10 stars on their shirts is a reminder of sustained excellence rather than a guarantee of further success.

For now, Nigeria holds a unique position, the only women’s team in the world with 10 continental titles, and the first African side of either gender to wear that number on their jersey.

“Should the NFF prioritise a specialised women’s football coach for the Super Falcons permanent role, or is experience managing the Super Eagles enough?”

NFF named Austin Eguavoen interim Super Falcons coach for Oct Olympic qualifiers vs Comoros after Madugu’s sacking post-World Cup miss. Pros: proven crisis experience + strong women’s staff (Danjuma, Yusuf). Cons: no prior women’s coaching; feels like recycling. Fine short-term vs weak foe, but team needs specialist permanent boss.

Fresh Fitness Blow for Super Falcons as Esther Okoronkwo Sidelined for Rest of 2026 Campaign

Super Falcons forward Esther Okoronkwo has been ruled out for the rest of the 2026 campaign following a severe injury layoff confirmed by AFC Toronto. The forced absence excludes her from Nigeria's double-header against Comoros in October for the 2028 LA Olympic qualifiers. Her injury follows midfielder Deborah Abiodun's season-ending hip injury, depriving the Super Falcons of two key starters as they begin their rebuilding phase.
