Poland vs Nigeria: Flamingos FIFA U-17 World Cup Match Preview, Kick-off Time & How to Watch Live

Nigeria’s Flamingos open their 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup campaign against Poland in Group B on Saturday in Morocco.

The 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup runs from 17 October to 7 November, with Nigeria drawn alongside Poland, Puerto Rico and defending champions Korea DPR in Group B.

For Nigeria, the tournament offers another chance to build on their strong history at this level. The Flamingos finished third in India 2022 and arrive as 2026 WAFU-B U-17 Girls Cup champions under head coach Akeem Busari.

Poland vs Nigeria Match Preview

Poland provide a serious opening test.

The European side reached the quarter-finals at the 2024 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup before losing to eventual champions Korea DPR. They return after missing the 2025 edition.

Poland booked their place in Morocco by defeating England 2-0 in the UEFA play-off on 14 May 2026. Zofia Burzan scored both goals (42' and 55') at Inver Park, Larne, to secure qualification. Under coach Paulina Kawalec, they carry that recent competitive edge into Group B.

Nigeria, meanwhile, qualified after defeating Benin 8-5 on aggregate (3-2, 5-3) and then swept the 2026 WAFU-B U-17 Girls Cup with a perfect record. Captain Harmony Chidi has been a consistent threat in both campaigns.

This is the first meeting between the two teams at U-17 level.

Busari’s side will need to balance control in possession with the ability to break down an organised European opponent. Poland are expected to be compact and physical, so Nigeria’s decision-making in the final third and set-piece quality could prove decisive. A strong start would give the Flamingos early momentum before their tougher tests against Puerto Rico and Korea DPR.

The Road to Morocco

Nigeria navigated a demanding African qualifying path before lifting the WAFU-B title. Under Busari, who took charge earlier in 2026, the Flamingos have shown improved organisation and attacking variety.

Five players who featured in the 2026 FIFA U20 Women's World Cup in Poland also made the final 21-player squad named for the World Cup. Busari has emphasised discipline, patience against deep defences, and the need to respect every opponent. “We respect every team, and we are not looking down on any team,” Busari has said in the build-up.

Players to Watch

Harmony Chidi (Captain, Forward) – The Bayelsa Queens striker has been Nigeria’s most consistent threat in qualifying and at the WAFU-B Cup, scoring regularly and leading from the front.

Queen Joseph – The Fosla Academy forward has shown sharp movement and finishing, including a hat-trick against Benin in qualifying.

Oluwakemi Adegbuyi, the 2026 WAFU-B U-17 Girls Cup MVP who scored four goals and created several more as Nigeria won all five matches, gives Busari a proven attacking option. She is joined by Precious Oscar, Tosin Rafiu and Favour Nkwocha who featured at the recent FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.

Zofia Burzan is Poland’s go-to source of goals at this age group. She scored in the group stage against Finland, again in the loss to Spain, and then both goals in the decisive play-off win over England — the clearest sign of who Poland lean on when they need a goal. Nigeria’s defence will need to keep a close eye on her movement and finishing.

What It Takes to Reach the Round of 16

The top two teams in Group B advance automatically to the knockout stage. The four best third-placed sides across the six groups also progress, so finishing third is not an automatic elimination.

For the Flamingos, the clearest path is to finish in the top two. A win against Poland on Saturday would put them in a strong position heading into the Puerto Rico game and the final match against Korea DPR. Six points from the first two matches would likely secure qualification before the toughest fixture, while four points would still leave them well placed.

Finishing third remains possible, but it would leave Nigeria dependent on results in the other groups. Securing second place, or better, removes that uncertainty and sets up a more favourable Round of 16 draw.

Can the Flamingos Go Far?

The immediate target is a positive result against Poland and progression from Group B. Beyond that, the Flamingos will aim to improve on their 2022 third-place finish and the Round of 16 exit in the previous edition.

Busari’s message has been clear: respect every opponent, stay disciplined, and play with the intensity required on the biggest stage. Saturday’s opener is the first step.
