Nigeria Flamingos Beat Mexico 2-1 to Reach FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup Quarter-Finals

Nigeria will face Venezuela on 1 November after Oluebube Umejiaku and Mary Dunstan scored in a tense Round of 16 victory.

Nigeria’s Flamingos have advanced to the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup after defeating Mexico 2-1 in their Round of 16 encounter in Salé, Morocco, on Thursday.

Goals from Oluebube Umejiaku and Mary Dunstan gave Nigeria a two-goal advantage before Emily Delgado scored for Mexico deep into stoppage time. The Flamingos held on through an extended second half to secure their place in the last eight.

The victory sets up a quarter-final meeting with Venezuela on Sunday, 1 November 2026.

Umejiaku gives Nigeria the lead

After an opening period in which both teams created opportunities, Nigeria broke the deadlock in the 40th minute through Umejiaku.

The forward found the net to put the Flamingos ahead, and Nigeria carried their 1-0 advantage into half-time after the referee added eight minutes to the first half.

Mexico made two substitutions before the interval, bringing on Nicole Jimenez for Mia Urbano and Naomi Rojo for Bianka Arredondo as they sought to change the course of the match.

Dunstan extends Nigeria’s advantage

Nigeria returned for the second half with their lead intact, while Mexico made further changes in search of an equaliser.

The Flamingos doubled their advantage in the 71st minute when Mary Dunstan scored to make it 2-0. The goal gave Nigeria a two-goal cushion with less than 20 minutes of normal time remaining.

Mexico responded with additional substitutions, including the withdrawal of captain Citlalli Reyes in the 75th minute. Nigeria also made changes, with Precious Oscar replacing Oluwakemi Adegbuyi in the 66th minute.

As the match progressed, Mexico pushed forward in search of a way back into the contest, while Nigeria continued to look for opportunities to extend their lead.

Mexico score late, but Flamingos hold on

The closing stages became increasingly tense as the referee added significant stoppage time.

Nigeria made two substitutions in the 87th minute, bringing on Chidera Chidi for Queen Joseph and Awawu Bashiru for Dunstan.

Mexico eventually found the net in the 90+10th minute. Emily Delgado scored following an assist from Camila Campos to reduce the deficit to 2-1.

The goal gave Mexico renewed hope, but Nigeria managed the remaining minutes to protect their advantage. Despite further pressure and a late corner for the Flamingos, neither side scored again.

The referee brought the match to an end at 90+17, confirming Nigeria’s 2-1 victory and their progression to the quarter-finals.

With the win, Nigeria have recorded three victories at the tournament, equalling their highest-ever number of wins in a single edition of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.

The victory sends the Flamingos into the last eight, where they will face Venezuela on Sunday, 1 November 2026.
