How Nigeria Reached the Round of 16
Nigeria began their Group B campaign with a 2-1 defeat to Poland. Wiktoria Skrzypczak converted a penalty in the 33rd minute before Natalia Skrok doubled Poland’s lead in the 65th minute. Oluebube Umejiaku pulled one back for Nigeria in the 79th minute, assisted by Kanyinsola Yusuf, but the Flamingos could not find an equaliser.
They responded with a 2-0 victory over Puerto Rico. Oluwakemi Adegbuyi opened the scoring in the 25th minute following an assist from Queen Joseph, while Precious Oscar sealed the win in stoppage time after being set up by Umejiaku.
Nigeria then produced one of their most significant results of the tournament, defeating defending champions DPR Korea 3-1 to secure their place in the knockout stage.
Adegbuyi opened the scoring in the 15th minute, with Mary Dunstan providing the assist. Umejiaku doubled Nigeria’s advantage in the 38th minute following a pass from Tosin Rafiu, while Yusuf added a third in the 56th minute. DPR Korea’s Yu Jong Hyang converted a penalty in the 82nd minute, but Nigeria held on for an impressive victory.

The result carried historical significance. Nigeria ended DPR Korea’s run of 18 consecutive matches without a regulation-time defeat at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup. The defending champions had last lost in regulation time against Germany in their opening match at Uruguay 2018, 2,900 days earlier.
DPR Korea had won the previous two editions of the tournament. Nigeria’s victory therefore ended a remarkable unbeaten run and gave the Flamingos considerable momentum heading into the knockout stage.
Nigeria finished Group B with six points, scoring six goals and conceding four.
How Mexico Reached the Round of 16
Mexico also recovered from an opening defeat to win their next two matches and progress from Group F.
They began with a 2-0 loss to Spain, conceding goals to Carolina Ferrera in the 42nd minute and Elena Vizuete in the 48th.
Mexico bounced back against Chile, winning 3-1. Chile took the lead through Catalina Muñoz in the 12th minute, but Mia Urbano equalised for Mexico in the 35th minute following an assist from Bianka Arredondo.
Citlalli Reyes put Mexico ahead in the 65th minute, again assisted by Arredondo, before Nicole Jimenez scored in the 83rd minute after Reyes turned provider.
Mexico completed their group campaign with a 1-0 victory over Australia. Reyes scored the decisive goal in the 35th minute, with Natalia Perez providing the assist.
The victory secured Mexico’s second win of the group stage and further underlined Reyes’ importance to the team.

The Mexico captain also made history against Australia. FIFA confirmed that Reyes became the all-time record appearance-maker at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, reaching 13 appearances. She moved ahead of previous record-holders that include Venezuela’s Deyna Castellanos and Spain’s Claudia Pina.
Her experience at the tournament, combined with her goalscoring contribution, makes Reyes one of the players Nigeria must monitor closely on Thursday.
Mexico finished Group F with six points, scoring four goals and conceding three.
FIFA Statistic: Three Teams Finished Group B on Six Points
Nigeria’s group-stage campaign also formed part of a rare outcome in the competition’s history.

According to FIFA, for the first time at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, three teams in the same group finished with six points. Nigeria, DPR Korea and Poland each recorded two wins and one defeat in Group B, while Puerto Rico lost all three matches.
The final standings were therefore determined by the competition’s ranking criteria, with DPR Korea finishing first and Nigeria advancing in second place.
The competitive nature of Group B meant Nigeria had to recover from their opening defeat to secure qualification. Their victory over DPR Korea proved decisive in building momentum before the Round of 16.
However, the group-stage results count for little once knockout football begins. Against Mexico, Nigeria will need to reproduce the quality they showed in their final group match.
Nigeria vs Mexico: Head-to-Head Record
Nigeria and Mexico have met at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup before.
At the 2014 edition, Nigeria defeated Mexico 3-0 in the group stage. Rasheedat Ajibade opened the scoring in the 12th minute, Uchenna Kanu added a second in the 16th minute, and Aminat Yakubu completed the scoring in the 58th minute.

That result gives Nigeria a positive historical reference ahead of Thursday’s encounter. However, the match involved different generations of players and offers no guarantee of a similar outcome in 2026.
The upcoming Round of 16 tie will provide a fresh test for both teams, with a quarter-final place at stake.
Players to Watch
Nigeria: Oluwakemi Adegbuyi
Adegbuyi has been one of Nigeria’s important attacking options in Morocco. She scored against Puerto Rico and opened the scoring against DPR Korea, demonstrating her ability to make an impact in different matches.

Her movement and finishing could be important against a Mexico side that conceded three goals during the group stage.
Nigeria: Oluebube Umejiaku
Umejiaku has contributed both goals and assists during Nigeria’s campaign. She scored against Poland and DPR Korea and assisted Precious Oscar’s goal against Puerto Rico.
Her ability to contribute in the final third makes her another player Mexico must account for.
Nigeria: Kanyinsola Yusuf
Yusuf has contributed at both ends of the pitch. She assisted Umejiaku’s goal against Poland and scored Nigeria’s third goal against DPR Korea.

Her attacking contribution from defence could provide another route to goal, particularly if Mexico focus on Nigeria’s forwards.
Nigeria: Chidera Chidi
Captain Chidera Chidi could have an important role to play as Nigeria seek to progress to the quarter-finals. Her possible inclusion in the starting XI would give the Flamingos another attacking option as they look to challenge Mexico’s defence.
Nigeria will need their attacking players to make effective use of the chances created, particularly against an opponent that has won two consecutive matches.
Mexico: Citlalli Reyes
Reyes is arguably Mexico’s most important player heading into the tie. The captain scored against Chile and Australia, while her record 13 appearances at the competition underline her experience at this level.
Nigeria will need to limit the time and space available to her, especially around the penalty area.

Mexico: Bianka Arredondo
Arredondo supplied the assists for Mexico’s first two goals against Chile. Her creativity and ability to create chances could be influential if Mexico find opportunities to attack Nigeria’s defensive line.
Mexico: Mia Urbano
Urbano scored Mexico’s equaliser against Chile, helping to turn a difficult match around. Her movement and ability to take advantage of chances make her another attacking threat for the Flamingos to consider.
Tactical Preview: Where the Match Could Be Decided
Nigeria will take confidence from their performance against DPR Korea, but maintaining that level will be essential against Mexico.
The Flamingos have shown they can create scoring opportunities through their forwards and supporting players. Their ability to convert chances was evident in the victories over Puerto Rico and DPR Korea.
Mexico, meanwhile, demonstrated resilience by recovering from their opening defeat to win their next two matches. Reyes and Arredondo offer creativity, while the team's victories over Chile and Australia suggest they can find ways to win close contests.
One key battle will be Nigeria’s ability to restrict Reyes’ influence. Allowing the Mexico captain time to receive the ball and dictate attacks could create problems for the Flamingos.
Nigeria must also remain organised when defending transitions and avoid conceding unnecessary set pieces or penalties. At the other end, the movement of Chidi, Adegbuyi and Queen could test Mexico’s defence, depending on the attacking combination selected by Busari.
With both teams having scored in each of their two group-stage victories, the side that manages key moments more effectively could gain the advantage.

Nigeria vs Mexico: Predicted Flamingos Starting XI
Nigeria’s official starting line-up has not been confirmed. However, captain Chidera Chidi could come into the starting XI for the Round of 16 encounter.
Predicted Nigeria XI (4-3-3):
Jane Ijirigho; Azeezat Oduntan, Ohunene Sunday, Esther Stephen, Kanyinsola Yusuf; Favour Nkwocha, Mary Dunstan, Tosin Rafiu; Queen Joseph, Chidera Chidi, Oluwakemi Adegbuyi.

This is a predicted line-up, not a confirmed team selection. Oluebube Umejiaku remains another strong attacking option after scoring against Puerto Rico and DPR Korea, while Precious Oscar and Awawu Bashiru could also provide alternatives.

Prediction: Nigeria vs Mexico
This is likely to be a closely contested encounter between two teams that recovered from opening defeats to win their next two group matches.
Nigeria will take confidence from ending DPR Korea’s remarkable unbeaten run, while Mexico have shown they can respond under pressure and have a record-breaking captain in Reyes.
The Flamingos will need to combine the attacking quality they displayed against DPR Korea with defensive discipline and careful management of Mexico’s key players. Chidi’s possible inclusion could provide another dimension to Nigeria’s attack, although the final selection will be down to Busari.
Prediction: Nigeria to win narrowly, although Mexico have enough quality to make this a difficult test.
A place in the quarter-finals is at stake, and Nigeria will hope their momentum from the group stage can carry them through to the next round.
