Nigeria’s Road to the 2027 U20 FIFA World Cup Begins: Flying Eagles Drawn Against Ghana in 2026 WAFU B U20 Boys Cup

The Flying Eagles of Nigeria will face familiar foes as they kick off their quest for 2027 FIFA U20 World Cup.
Nigeria have been placed in a highly competitive Group B for the 2026 WAFU B U20 Boys Championship, drawn alongside arch-rivals Ghana’s Black Satellites, Burkina Faso, and Togo.

Hosts and defending champions Côte d’Ivoire were drawn in Group A alongside Niger and Benin Republic. The tournament is scheduled to run from July 26 to August 9, 2026 in Côte d’Ivoire.
Qualification Context: Eyes on U20 AFCON (Ghana 2027) and U20 World Cup (Azerbaijan/Uzbekistan 2027).
The WAFU B U20 Championship doubles as a vital qualifier for the 2027 CAF U20 Africa Cup of Nations, which Ghana will host. The Black Satellites have already booked their spot as hosts, leaving the remaining teams to scrap for the other berths.
The 2027 U20 AFCON will feature 12 teams, with the top four (semi-finalists) earning qualification to the 2027 FIFA U-20 World Cup co-hosted by Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan.
Nigeria enter the regional tournament in strong form, having lifted the WAFU B title in both 2022 and 2024, before suffering a narrow 1-0 defeat to Côte d’Ivoire in the most recent final. South Africa are the current African champions after their maiden title success in Egypt.
CAF is expected to confirm dates, venues, and host cities for the 2027 U20 AFCON in Ghana in the coming months.
Is WAFU B Being Short-Changed in CAF Qualification?
West Africa remains a production line for elite youth talent across the continent. Yet WAFU B has long been restricted to just two qualification slots for the U20 AFCON, a situation that continues to draw criticism.
With Ghana already qualified as hosts, there is realistic hope for three WAFU B nations at the 2027 finals, though CAF is yet to issue full clarification on slot distribution.
How the zones fared in the previous cycle:
• North Africa: 3 teams (Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia)
• Southern Africa: 2 teams (South Africa, Zambia)
• Central-East Africa: 2 teams (Kenya, Tanzania)
• Central Africa: 2 teams (DR Congo, Central African Republic)
• West A: 2 teams (Senegal, Sierra Leone)
• West B: 2 teams (Ghana, Nigeria)
Many analysts argue this structure no longer reflects the current landscape of African youth football. A shift toward a centralized, merit-based qualifying tournament where all zones compete together in mixed groups could deliver a fairer and more competitive system.
Nigeria have the squad depth and pedigree to thrive, but the qualification pathway still feels stacked against the region’s true strength. The Flying Eagles’ road to the 2027 FIFA U-20 World Cup starts here and it promises to be intense.
