Flamingos Seek Response After Poland Defeat
Nigeria head into the fixture needing a stronger performance after their 2-1 loss to Poland.
The Flamingos had opportunities to trouble the Polish defence but struggled to convert their attempts into goals. Poland took the lead through Wiktoria Skrzypczak’s 33rd-minute penalty before Natalia Skrok doubled the advantage in the 65th minute.
Nigeria responded through Umejiaku in the 79th minute after substitute Kanyinsola Yusuf helped create the scoring opportunity. However, the late goal was not enough to earn a point.
Busari’s team will hope to improve their finishing and make better use of their attacking opportunities against Puerto Rico.
Puerto Rico: World Cup Debutants Looking for First Points
Puerto Rico are making history in Morocco. Their participation marks the country’s first appearance at a FIFA World Cup at any level, making their opening match against Korea DPR a landmark occasion.
The team secured qualification by finishing as the best-ranked runner-up in the final round of the 2026 Concacaf Women’s U-17 Qualifiers. Puerto Rico finished with two wins and one defeat in that round, edging out Costa Rica for the final qualifying place. Their qualifying campaign included a 3-1 victory over Haiti and a 9-0 win against Bermuda. Giselle Falcón scored in both matches, registering a penalty against Haiti and two goals against Bermuda.
However, their first World Cup outing proved difficult. Korea DPR scored six times in a 6-0 victory, with Yu Jong Hyang and Kim Won Sim both scoring twice.
Puerto Rico showed greater defensive resistance after the interval, but they will need to be more organised against Nigeria while looking for opportunities to threaten the Flamingos’ goal.
Player to Watch: Giselle Falcón
Falcón is one of Puerto Rico’s attacking players to watch after her performances during qualifying. Her goals against Haiti and Bermuda demonstrated her ability to contribute in front of goal.

Nigeria will need to limit the space available to Falcón and prevent Puerto Rico from building confidence in the attacking third.
Nigeria vs Puerto Rico: Projected Starting Line-ups
The official starting line-ups have not yet been announced. These projections are based on the teams’ most recent World Cup starting line-ups and are subject to change.

Nigeria Flamingos (Projected 4-1-2-3)
Goalkeeper: Jane Ijirigho
Defenders: Elizabeth Adesuyi, Azeezat Oduntan, Ohunene Sunday, Esther Stephen
Midfielders: Tosin Rafiu, Mary Dunstan, Favour Nkwocha
Forwards: Queen Joseph, Chidera Harmony Chidi, Oluwakemi Adegbuyi
Busari could retain much of the team that started against Poland, with Chidi potentially returning to lead the attack. Awawu Bashiru, Oluebube Umejiaku, Kanyinsola Yusuf and Precious Oscar are among the options available to the coach after their appearances off the bench in the opening match.
Puerto Rico (Projected 4-3-3)
Goalkeeper: Victoria Moore-Torres
Defenders: Jaeda Russell, Sandra O’Neill, Camila Adame, Reese Lanier
Midfielders: Zoe Melia, Daovy Acevedo, Giselle Falcón
Forwards: Selymar Centeno, Mia Colón, Megan Rivera
Puerto Rico used a 4-3-3 formation against Korea DPR. The projected line-up largely follows that starting team, although coach Andrés Mirabelli could make changes after the opening defeat.
Note: These are projected line-ups, not confirmed team selections.

What Nigeria Need from the Match
The Flamingos need a positive result after losing their opening fixture, but they cannot afford to underestimate a Puerto Rico side that will also be seeking a response.
With Korea DPR leading Group B after their 6-0 win over Puerto Rico, every point could prove important in the race for the knockout stages. The top two teams in each group qualify automatically for the Round of 16, alongside the four best third-placed teams across the six groups.
For Nigeria, improved finishing and a more composed performance in both penalty areas will be important as they seek their first win of the tournament.
