Nigeria Flamingos Beat Puerto Rico 2-0 to Claim First Win at U-17 Women’s World Cup

Nigeria’s Flamingos recorded their first victory at the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup with a 2-0 win over Puerto Rico U-17 in their second Group B match on Tuesday, 20 October 2026.

The match was played at the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Rabat, Morocco, with Oluwakemi Adegbuyi opening the scoring in the first half before substitute Precious Oscar sealed the victory in stoppage time.

Adegbuyi Gives Nigeria First-Half Lead

The Flamingos started on the front foot, creating attacking opportunities through Queen Joseph, Chidera Chidi and Adegbuyi.

Nigeria took the lead in the 25th minute when Adegbuyi found the net following an assist from Queen Joseph.

The goal gave Nigeria a 1-0 advantage, which they maintained until half-time.

Oscar Seals Victory in Stoppage Time

Nigeria continued to search for a second goal after the restart, with Tosin Rafiu, Favour Nkwocha, Chidi and Joseph among those attempting to extend the lead.

Puerto Rico also created opportunities as the match progressed, but Nigeria held on to their advantage.

Head coach Akeem Busari introduced Precious Oscar for Queen Joseph in the 76th minute. Oluebube Umejiaku and Awawu Bashiru also came on for Chidi and Mary Dunstan.

The changes helped Nigeria maintain their attacking threat late in the game.

In the 90+3rd minute, Oscar doubled the Flamingos’ lead, finishing a move assisted by Umejiaku after Kanyinsola Yusuf took a corner kick.

The goal put the result beyond Puerto Rico, as Nigeria completed a 2-0 victory at the end of six minutes of added time.

The victory gives Nigeria three points after two matches. North Korea U-17 lead the group with six points from two matches, while Poland also have three points. Puerto Rico remain bottom without a point after two defeats.

Group B Standings

  1. North Korea U-17: 6 pts (GD +11)

  2. Poland U-17: 3 pts (GD -4)

  3. Nigeria U-17: 3 pts (GD +1)

  4. Puerto Rico U-17: 0 pts (GD -8)

Poland sit second in Group B ahead of Nigeria despite both teams having three points because Poland defeated the Flamingos 2-1 in their opening match. Under FIFA’s group-stage tie-breaking rules, head-to-head results take precedence over overall goal difference when teams are level on points.

Nigeria opened their campaign with a 2-1 defeat to Poland before responding with this win over Puerto Rico.

The Flamingos will face North Korea in their final Group B fixture on Friday, 23 October, as they seek to secure progression to the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco.
