Flamingos off to a flying start

Nigeria began their campaign in impressive fashion, defeating Niger Republic 5-0 on Wednesday.

Captain Harmony Chidi opened the scoring in the 16th minute before Awawu Bashiru doubled Nigeria’s lead in the 35th minute.

The Flamingos continued to dominate after the break and added three more goals late in the game.

Ohunene Sunday made it 3-0 in the 83rd minute, Mary Dunstan added the fourth a minute later, while Ayomide Rotimi completed the scoring in stoppage time.

The result gave Nigeria three points, five goals and a clean sheet from their opening game.

It was also a useful competitive outing for coach Hakeem Busari and his players as they continue their preparations for the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco.

Ghana also started with a win

The Black Maidens also have three points after beginning their campaign with a 4-0 victory over Burkina Faso.

That means both Nigeria and Ghana enter Saturday’s encounter having scored four or more goals in their opening games.

The meeting therefore presents an early test for both teams as they look to build momentum in Côte d’Ivoire.

A familiar West African rivalry

Nigeria and Ghana have history at this level.

The two nations met in the 2024 WAFU-B U17 Girls Cup final, with the match ending 2-2 before Ghana eventually prevailed on penalties.

The Flamingos will now have another opportunity to face their West African rivals, this time with both teams already having opened the 2026 tournament with convincing victories.

For Nigeria, the focus will be on maintaining the attacking efficiency shown against Niger while dealing with a Ghana side that also demonstrated its goal-scoring ability in its opening match.

World Cup preparation

The WAFU-B tournament also provides important competitive preparation for the Flamingos ahead of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco.

Nigeria have already qualified for the global tournament, and the matches in Côte d’Ivoire give Busari and his players an opportunity to gain valuable competitive minutes and continue building towards the World Cup.

The regional tournament is therefore about more than the immediate result. It is another opportunity for the Flamingos to test themselves against strong West African opposition before turning their attention fully to Morocco.
