Nigeria’s Flamingos will look to maintain their perfect start to the 2026 WAFU B U17 Girls Cup when they face hosts Côte d’Ivoire on Thursday, 24 September. The match is scheduled for 7:00pm WAT at the Lycée Scientifique in Yamoussoukro, with both teams coming into the encounter after playing three matches each.

Nigeria currently sit top of the standings with nine points from three wins, while Côte d’Ivoire are second with six points from two wins and one defeat.

Flamingos unbeaten and perfect so far

The Flamingos have made a strong start to the tournament under coach Akeem Busari, winning all three of their matches. Nigeria opened their campaign with a 5-0 victory over Niger before defeating Ghana 4-2 in the Jollof Derby.

Their victory over Ghana was particularly notable because Nigeria finished the match with 10 players. The Flamingos had taken a 2-0 lead through Oluwakemi Adegbuyi and captain Harmony Chidi before defender Elizabeth Adesuyi was shown a straight red card in the 59th minute. Ghana immediately reduced the deficit through captain Seidatu Wahab, who scored directly from the resulting free-kick to make it 2-1. However, Nigeria responded despite being a player down, with Mary Dunstan restoring the two-goal advantage before Kaosarat Akanji made it 4-1. Ghana scored a late second through Gloria Ameaa, but Nigeria held on for the 4-2 victory.

The Flamingos then defeated Burkina Faso 2-0 in their third match, with Mary Dunstan breaking the deadlock in the 82nd minute before Oluwakemi Adegbuyi sealed the victory in the fourth minute of stoppage time.

Nigeria have therefore scored 11 goals and conceded just two across their opening three matches.

Côte d’Ivoire looking to build on Niger win

Côte d’Ivoire have also played three matches ahead of Thursday's meeting with Nigeria.

The hosts opened their campaign with a 3-2 victory over Togo before suffering a 1-0 defeat to Burkina Faso.

They bounced back emphatically in their third match, defeating Niger 9-0 on 21 September. Grâce Gnadou scored a hat-trick in the opening stages of the match as Côte d’Ivoire returned to winning ways. The result moved the hosts to six points and left them with a +9 goal difference, the same as Nigeria.

The two sides therefore arrive at Thursday's encounter with identical +9 goal differences, but Nigeria have three wins from three while Côte d’Ivoire have two wins and one defeat.

Flamingos targeting 12 points

A win for Nigeria would take the Flamingos to 12 points from four matches and extend their perfect record in the competition.

For Côte d’Ivoire, another victory would take the hosts to nine points and keep them firmly among the teams at the top of the standings.

Nigeria will also be looking to maintain the momentum generated by their opening three victories as the WAFU B tournament provides competitive preparation for the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup in Morocco.

The Flamingos' ability to manage different match situations has already been tested in the tournament, particularly against Ghana when they played more than 30 minutes with 10 players.
