Nigeria Flamingos 5-0 Niger: Flamingos Open WAFU-B U17 Girls’ Cup With Big Win

Nigeria’s Flamingos made a strong start to the 2026 WAFU-B U17 Girls’ Cup, defeating Niger Republic 5-0 in their opening Group B fixture on Wednesday, September 16, in Yamoussoukro, Côte d’Ivoire.

The defending champions dominated the contest and produced five goals across the 90 minutes, with captain Chidi Harmony opening the scoring in the 16th minute.

Awawu Bashiru doubled Nigeria’s advantage in the 35th minute as the Flamingos took a comfortable 2-0 lead into the interval.

Nigeria continued to control the game after the restart, creating further opportunities as Niger struggled to contain the Flamingos’ attacking pressure.

The third goal eventually arrived in the 83rd minute through Ohunene Sunday. Just a minute later, Oluebube Umejiaku added a fourth to put the result beyond doubt.

Ayomide Rotimi completed the scoring in the 94th minute, giving Nigeria a comprehensive 5-0 victory and a clean sheet in their tournament opener.

The meeting with Ghana is particularly significant given the two teams’ recent history at this level. The Flamingos will be looking to build on their emphatic opening victory as they continue their campaign in Côte d’Ivoire.

For now, Nigeria can take confidence from a five-goal performance, five different scorers and a clean sheet in their first competitive outing of the tournament.
