Nigeria Flying Eagles Reach Final and Clinch U20 AFCON Ticket

The Flying Eagles booked their place in the final of the 2026 WAFU B U-20 Championship after edging hosts Côte d’Ivoire 4-3 on penalties following a thrilling 2-2 draw after extra time.
Côte d’Ivoire, who had conceded just one goal throughout the tournament before the semi-final, dominated large spells of the first half with superior possession and several goal-scoring opportunities. Their persistence paid off in the 17th minute as they broke the deadlock, but they were unable to extend their advantage despite creating more chances.
Nigeria responded strongly in the second half. In the 68th minute, captain Habila Simeon rose highest to head home a long throw from Oraro Lucky, leaving the Ivorian goalkeeper with no chance. The equaliser gave the Flying Eagles renewed confidence as they controlled the closing stages of regulation time.

The match ended 1-1 after 90 minutes, forcing extra time.
Abdul Maikaba’s side completed the turnaround in the opening minutes of extra time. Once again, Oraro Lucky’s long throw caused problems, and this time Aliyu Abubakar powered home a header to put Nigeria ahead 2-1.
The hosts refused to give up and restored parity in the 105th minute, sending the contest to a penalty shootout after the game finished 2-2.
Goalkeeper Clinton Lawani emerged as Nigeria’s hero, producing two crucial saves in the shootout as the Flying Eagles triumphed 4-3 on penalties to seal their place in the WAFU B U-20 Championship final.
