US Open: Seun Ogunsakin Claims Historic First Junior Grand Slam Main-Draw Victory

Nigeria's rising tennis star Seun Ogunsakin has made history at the US Open Junior Championships, claiming his first-ever Grand Slam main-draw victory with a dramatic comeback win over 15th seed Kuan-Shou Chen of Chinese Taipei.

Ogunsakin battled from a set down to defeat the highly rated Chen 5-7, 6-3, 7-5 and advance to the second round in New York.

The victory was a significant milestone for the Nigerian teenager, who became the first Nigerian player to win a Grand Slam main-draw singles match across both junior and professional tennis since Nduka Odizor at the 1990 Australian Open.

A Battle of Resilience

Ogunsakin entered the match as an underdog against the 15th seed and was pushed hard in the opening set, eventually losing it 7-5.

However, the Nigerian youngster responded impressively. He raised his level in the second set, taking it 6-3 to force the match into a deciding set.

With both players battling for a place in the second round, Ogunsakin showed remarkable composure to edge the final set 7-5 and complete one of the biggest victories of his young career.

From Qualifier to History Maker

Ogunsakin's journey to the main draw was already impressive.

The Aurum Tennis Academy player successfully came through the qualifying rounds, including a notable victory over top seed Felix Roussel of Canada. His win over Chen has now taken his remarkable run in New York to another level.

The 2026 US Open is Ogunsakin's third consecutive junior Grand Slam appearance this year, following his outings at the French Open and Wimbledon.

At Wimbledon, he made history by becoming the first Nigerian player to reach a Grand Slam main draw, junior or professional, since Odizor's appearance at the 1990 US Open.
