Okoronkwo benched, Oshoala starts as Justin Madugu shuffles Super Falcons XI for Zambia clash

Following Nigeria's disappointing opening-day defeat at the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations, Super Falcons head coach Justin Madugu has rung the changes to his starting XI ahead of the crucial Group B encounter against Zambia.

The Super Falcons suffered a shock 3-2 loss to tournament debutants Malawi in their opening fixture — the first time Nigeria have ever lost to a nation making its WAFCON debut.

The Malawians took the lead in the 69th minute through Temwa Chawinga before her sister, Tabitha Chawinga, doubled the advantage five minutes later.

Rasheedat Ajibade pulled one back from the penalty spot in the first minute of added time, but Temwa Chawinga completed her brace moments later to restore Malawi's two-goal cushion. Uchenna Kanu's strike in the eighth minute of stoppage time proved to be nothing more than a consolation.

The result sparked widespread criticism from Nigerian football fans and pundits, with many questioning Madugu's tactical approach and team selection.

In response, the Super Falcons boss has made five changes to the side that started against Malawi.

AdemolaSports understands that Esther Okoronkwo has been dropped to the bench, with six-time African Women's Footballer of the Year Asisat Oshoala returning to lead the attack.

Folashade Ijamilusi, who started on the right wing against Malawi, also drops to the bench, while Uchenna Kanu has been handed a place in the starting lineup.

In midfield, Christy Ucheibe and Deborah Abiodun, who were both substitutes in the opening match, have been recalled to the starting XI alongside Jennifer Echegini, who retains her place.

There is also a notable reshuffle in defence. Rofiat Imuran comes into the side, while AS Roma defender Shukurat Oladipo drops to the bench. The change sees Michelle Alozie return to her natural right-back position.

Tosin Demehin and Osinachi Ohale continue their partnership at centre-back, with Chiamaka Nnadozie keeping her place in goal.
