South Africa and Ghana’s Road to Brazil 2027 Explained: 4 Matches Stand Between Them and the Women’s World Cup

The 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup dream is over for Nigeria.

The Super Falcons suffered a painful defeat to South Africa in the WAFCON play-in on Thursday, August 13, ending their hopes of qualifying for next year’s tournament. It means Nigeria will miss the FIFA Women’s World Cup for the first time in the competition’s history.

For South Africa, however, the victory keeps the dream alive.

Banyana Banyana have now joined Ghana as Africa’s two representatives in the FIFA Inter-Confederation Play-Off Tournament, with both nations facing a long road to Brazil 2027.

Four African teams have already qualified

The four WAFCON semi-finalists have secured Africa’s automatic World Cup places.

They are:

🇨🇲 Cameroon
🇲🇼 Malawi
🇲🇦 Morocco
🇩🇿 Algeria

Malawi defeated Algeria in the semi-final, while Cameroon beat Morocco, confirming the four teams that occupy CAF’s automatic World Cup places.

That left two additional CAF places to be decided through the WAFCON play-in matches.

Ghana claimed one after beating Côte d’Ivoire 2–1.

South Africa claimed the other by defeating Nigeria.

So, South Africa and Ghana are now the two CAF teams heading into the FIFA Inter-Confederation Play-Off Tournament.

The road to Brazil is now four matches long

South Africa and Ghana will not qualify automatically.

They must now survive the FIFA Inter-Confederation Play-Off Tournament, which takes place across November–December 2026 and February 2027. FIFA has three remaining World Cup places to award through this tournament.

Phase One: November–December 2026

The first phase will feature six teams:

🇿🇦 South Africa
🇬🇭 Ghana
🇺🇿 Uzbekistan
🇹🇼 Chinese Taipei
🇵🇬 Papua New Guinea
🇪🇨/🇻🇪 one of the CONMEBOL representatives, according to the tournament structure and ranking

Each team will play three matches.

South Africa and Ghana cannot face each other because FIFA does not allow teams from the same confederation to be drawn against one another in the same pathway.

After the three matches, only the top two teams will advance to the final phase.

That means South Africa and Ghana could both advance.

But both must perform well enough to finish among those top two.

Phase Two: February 2027

This is the final hurdle.

The two teams that survive Phase One will be joined by:

Two teams from CONCACAF
One team from CONMEBOL
One team from UEFA

That creates six teams.

They will be divided into three pathways, with each pathway producing one World Cup qualifier.

The matches will be single knockout games in February 2027.

Win your match and you qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.

So, how many matches must South Africa and Ghana play?

If either team makes it all the way to the World Cup, the route is simple to understand:

November–December 2026: 3 matches

February 2027: 1 final knockout match

Total: 4 matches

Win the fourth match and the World Cup ticket is theirs.

And importantly, South Africa and Ghana can both qualify.

If both finish in the top two during Phase One, both will advance to the February final phase. They cannot be drawn against each other, and both could potentially win their respective matches and qualify for Brazil.

Nigeria’s World Cup dream is over

For Nigeria, this is the painful end of a difficult WAFCON campaign.

The Super Falcons lost to Cameroon in the quarter-finals, missing out on the automatic qualification places. That sent Nigeria into the play-in against South Africa for one of CAF’s two remaining World Cup routes.

But South Africa won.

Nigeria will therefore not be part of the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.

For the first time since the inaugural FIFA Women’s World Cup in 1991, the Super Falcons will not be at the tournament.

South Africa and Ghana now carry Africa’s remaining hopes

The picture is now clear.

Four African teams are already going to Brazil: Cameroon, Malawi, Morocco and Algeria.

Two more are still fighting: South Africa and Ghana.

But they must take the long route.

Three matches in November and December.

Then, if they finish among the top two, one final knockout match in February 2027.

Four matches stand between South Africa or Ghana and the FIFA Women’s World Cup.

The road is long.

But for Banyana Banyana and the Black Queens, the dream is still alive.
