Nigeria Must Win: What the Falconets Need to Reach the U-20 World Cup Round of 16

The Nigeria Falconets face their most important match of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup this afternoon in Łódź.

With one point from their opening two Group F matches, Nigeria sit third in the group and fourth in the current ranking of third-placed teams. Their route to the Round of 16 is still open, but the equation is straightforward: beat New Caledonia.

How Nigeria qualify will determine who they face in the knockout stage.

The Situation

Nigeria opened the tournament with a 2–0 defeat to Spain before playing out a goalless draw with China PR.

After two matches, the Falconets have one point, no goals scored and a -2 goal difference.

Spain have already secured six points, while China have four. New Caledonia remain without a point.

The tournament format sends the top two teams from each group into the Round of 16, alongside the four best third-placed teams.

That means Nigeria still have two possible routes into the knockout stage: finishing second in Group F or qualifying as one of the four best third-placed teams.

The United States, Canada, Ecuador and Mexico have completed their group matches, so their points cannot change.

Nigeria and Portugal still have one match remaining. New Caledonia and Costa Rica can also finish third in their respective groups, depending on the final results.

What Nigeria Need

Beat New Caledonia

That is the priority.

A victory would take Nigeria to four points, putting them above Ecuador’s fixed total of three points in the third-place ranking.

Even if Portugal also win and reach four points, Nigeria would still have a route through as one of the four best third-placed teams, with the applicable tie-breakers determining the final order.

There is also still a chance to finish second in Group F.

China face Spain at the same time as Nigeria play New Caledonia. If Nigeria win and China fail to beat Spain, the Falconets can finish runners-up in the group and qualify directly for the Round of 16.

If Nigeria finish 2nd in Group F

• Possible opponent: England

If Nigeria finish second in Group F, they are scheduled to face England on 17 September in Bielsko-Biała.

If Nigeria qualify as one of the best third-placed teams

• Requirement: Beat New Caledonia (a 1-0 victory is enough)

• Possible opponent: France or Italy

If Nigeria advance as one of the best third-placed teams, their opponent would depend on the final third-place allocation, with France or Italy possible opponents. Those matches are scheduled for 16–17 September in Łódź or Sosnowiec.

Who Else Can Still Affect the Third-Place Race?

Portugal face Costa Rica later on Sunday.

A Portuguese victory would take them to four points and could put them into the knockout bracket as Group E’s third-placed team.

New Caledonia and Costa Rica can also still finish third in Groups F and E respectively if they win their final matches. However, their current goal differences make that extremely difficult.

Ecuador are locked on +1.

New Caledonia are on -16 and would need an extraordinary margin of victory over Nigeria to reach Ecuador’s goal difference.

Costa Rica are on -6 and would need a very large victory over Portugal to move into serious contention.

The scenarios are mathematically possible, but Nigeria’s focus should remain on securing the three points.

This is not a match for Nigeria to approach by waiting for the result between China and Spain.

The match in front of the Falconets is the one that matters most.

New Caledonia have conceded 16 goals in their opening two matches, while Nigeria are still searching for their first goal of the tournament.
