The Nigeria Falconets begin their quest for a first-ever FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup title on Monday when they face Spain in their opening Group F fixture in Poland.

The 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup runs from September 5 to 27, with Nigeria drawn alongside Spain, China PR and New Caledonia in Group F.

For Nigeria, the tournament represents another opportunity to chase a trophy that has remained elusive despite the country’s remarkable record at the competition.

The Falconets have never missed a FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup and have reached the final twice, finishing runners-up in 2010 and 2014.

Now, under head coach Moses Aduku, this generation will attempt to go one step further.

Spain vs Nigeria Match Preview

Spain provide a major test immediately.

The European side qualified for Poland after winning the 2026 UEFA Women’s U-19 Championship, defeating Germany in the final. Spain arrived at the tournament as the five-time consecutive European U-19 champions, underlining the strength of their youth development system.

Spain are also the 2022 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup champions, making them one of the leading teams in the tournament.

Nigeria, meanwhile, qualified after defeating Malawi 3-2 on aggregate in the final round of African qualifying.

The Falconets won the first leg 2-0 before Malawi secured a 1-0 victory in the return fixture, with Nigeria advancing 3-2 on aggregate.

The opening match therefore presents a clear contrast: Spain arrive with an exceptional recent record in European youth football, while Nigeria bring their extraordinary consistency at this tournament and experience of reaching the final.

For Aduku’s side, the key will be finding the right balance between defensive organisation and attacking ambition.

Spain’s technical quality could make possession difficult to control, meaning Nigeria will need to remain disciplined without becoming too passive.

The Falconets will also need to make their opportunities count.

A positive result would provide a significant early boost, but a strong performance against one of the tournament’s leading contenders could also give Nigeria confidence ahead of their second group game.

The Road to Poland

Nigeria navigated three opponents during qualifying.

The Falconets defeated Rwanda 5-0 on aggregate, then overcame Senegal 3-1 on aggregate. Malawi provided the final challenge. Nigeria won the first leg 2-0 before losing 1-0 away, advancing 3-2 on aggregate.

The qualification objective was achieved, but the team that secured the World Cup ticket is not exactly the same group now competing in Poland.

Several players involved during qualifying are absent from the final squad, including Chiamaka Esther Ezekwugo, Shakirat Abidemi Moshood, Chinaza Kindness Ifeanyi, Taiwo Afolabi, just to name a few.

That means Aduku has had to develop new combinations and chemistry ahead of the tournament.

Janet Akekoromowei will not play the Opening Game

Although one of Nigeria’s biggest positives at the 2026 U20 Women’s World Cup is the return of Janet Seimeyeha Akekoromowei, she will however miss the opening game. The forward was involved during qualifying before an injury disrupted her participation against Senegal in February. She was forced off during the first leg in Abeokuta and subsequently missed the return fixture in Senegal.

Akekoromowei also recently joined SL Benfica in Portugal, giving her another major platform to develop her career.

Queen Joseph Also Worth Watching

Queen Joseph is another player attracting attention.

The forward has also featured for Nigeria’s U-17 Flamingos and recently scored a hat-trick against Benin Republic, helping Nigeria secure an 8-5 aggregate victory and qualification for the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco.

Her promotion to the U-20 setup gives Aduku another energetic attacking option and provides Joseph with an opportunity to test herself against older opposition.
