Nigeria must respond against China PR after opening their FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup campaign with defeat to Spain in Poland.
Nigeria’s Falconets suffered a disappointing start to their 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup campaign, losing 2–0 to Spain at the Arena Sosnowiec on Monday.
The Falconets were punished by Spain’s quality in front of goal, with Marisa García opening the scoring in the 13th minute before Alba Cerrato doubled the advantage in the 73rd minute.
Nigeria struggled to create enough clear-cut opportunities to get back into the game and ultimately left Sosnowiec without a point.
At half-time, Tumininu Adeshina and Folajomi Olabiyi were introduced as Nigeria looked to change the course of the match. Further changes followed in the second half, but the Falconets could not find a way past the Spanish defence.
The defeat leaves Nigeria with work to do, but qualification remains very much possible.

The Falconets’ next game against China PR on the 10th of September has now taken on even greater importance.
Nigeria cannot afford to dwell on the defeat to Spain. A win against China PR would take the Falconets to three points and immediately put them back in the qualification picture, while also handing China their first defeat of the tournament.
A draw would leave Nigeria with one point and make the final group game against New Caledonia even more important. Another defeat, however, would leave the Falconets facing a very difficult route to the knockout stage.
Under the tournament format, the top two teams in each group advance automatically to the Round of 16, alongside the four best third-placed teams.
That gives Nigeria an additional route to the knockout stage, but goal difference could become crucial if several teams finish third on the same number of points.
With two matches remaining, the message for the Falconets is simple: respond, get points on the board and give themselves a chance.
