Falconets Held by China 0-0, Nigeria’s 2026 U-20 Women’s World Cup Knockout Hopes Go Down to Final Game

Nigeria’s Falconets were held to a goalless draw by China PR on Thursday as their hopes of reaching the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup will be decided in their final Group F match.

The 0-0 draw at Arena Sosnowiec gave Nigeria their first point of the tournament after their opening-day defeat to Spain.

The result keeps the Falconets alive, but they will need to beat New Caledonia on Sunday to give themselves the best possible chance of progressing to the Round of 16.

China had more attempts, but Nigeria stood firm

China had the greater volume of attempts during the contest, finishing with 15 attempts at goal compared with Nigeria’s 10.

However, only three of China’s attempts were on target, while Nigeria managed two efforts on target.

Despite China creating opportunities, particularly during the second half, the Falconets kept their opponents scoreless for the entire 90 minutes plus stoppage time.

That clean sheet is a positive for Moses Aduku’s side, especially against a China team that had scored five goals in its opening match against New Caledonia.

Nigeria also showed some attacking pressure, winning seven corners compared with China’s two.

The Falconets could not turn that pressure into a goal, but defensively they remained disciplined enough to secure a point.

Janet Akekoromowei makes promising debut

One of the biggest positives for Nigeria was the appearance of Seimeyeha Janet Akekoromowei at this year's edition, she joined the Falconets in Poland after missing the opening game against Spain.

The forward made an encouraging debut and finished the match with five attempts at goal, the most by any Nigerian player.

Janet was involved in several of Nigeria’s attacking moments, recording efforts in the 17th, 32nd, 38th and 45th minutes before testing the China defence again in the 72nd minute.

Her willingness to get into attacking positions and attempt to make things happen offered Nigeria an additional threat going into the final group match.

Having only recently joined the squad, Janet’s first outing provides an encouraging foundation for what could be an important contribution against New Caledonia.

Falconets unable to find the breakthrough

Nigeria had opportunities of their own but struggled to turn them into a clear breakthrough. A major moment came in the 64th minute when a penalty decision was overturned following a VAR review, denying Nigeria the opportunity to take the lead from the spot.

The Falconets continued to push late in the game and won three corners in quick succession during stoppage time, but the decisive goal never arrived.

The final whistle confirmed a 0-0 draw.

Precious Oscar to miss New Caledonia clash

Nigeria will be without Precious Oscar for the final group game after she received a yellow card in the 60th minute.

Her suspension means Moses Aduku will have to make at least one change to the team for Sunday’s crucial encounter.

Ramotalahi Kareem replaced Oscar in the 74th minute, while Chisom Nwachukwu came on for Queen Joseph in the closing stages.

Qualification to the Round of 16

The draw was a positive result for China, who remain second in Group F on four points. China began the tournament with a 5-0 victory over New Caledonia before drawing with Nigeria. They are therefore still in a strong position to finish second and qualify automatically for the knockout stage.

Spain, meanwhile, have already secured top spot after winning both of their matches and boasting a +13 goal difference.

Nigeria still have a route through

The Group F standings leave Nigeria third on one point, behind China on four points and Spain on six.

Nigeria can still finish second in the group, depending on the final results, while a third-place finish could also be enough to qualify as one of the four best third-placed teams across the six groups.

But the Falconets cannot afford another dropped point.

New Caledonia next

Nigeria will face New Caledonia in their final Group F match on Sunday, September 13, at 2:00 PM WAT.

New Caledonia have lost both of their matches and currently sit bottom of the group with a -16 goal difference.

For the Falconets, the objective is clear.

Win the final game, then wait for the permutations to determine their final position.

The draw against China may not have been the result Nigeria wanted, but the point, a clean sheet against a dangerous China side and Janet Akekoromowei’s promising debut provide positives ahead of the decisive final match.
